How to Get Professional References
So, you got the interview and they loved your resume. They just want to make sure you are going to be a good fit, so they ask for a list of references. Providing professional references can be an essential part of the job-hunting process. Here are some tips to get you started:
-
Figure Out Quantity
The first step to getting a list of references is figuring out how many you will need. For most jobs, you will need at least three. If you are applying for a higher-level position, they may require more. Most companies will tell you how many you will need at the time of your interview.
-
Make a Potential List
Once you know how many are required, make a list of all of the potential people you could ask. All of them should have some relevance to the job you are applying for. They should not be family or personal friends. Start with all of your past employers and bosses. You want to make sure your choices will portray you in the best light so pick people who enjoyed working with you.
-
Always Ask First
After making a list of potential references, always call or email to ask if they would be comfortable being a reference for you. You do not want a former co-worker or employer to be put on the spot when they are asked about you. Give your references plenty of time in advance and ask politely.
-
Make a Page
Now that you have confirmed with your references that you may list them, it is time to make a page to give to potential employers. Like your resume, this page is a professional document and should not have typos or incorrect formatting. List each of your reference’s name, relation to you, phone number, and email address.
-
Follow up with a Thank You
It is important to follow up with your references with a thank you. They are taking time out of their day to help you advance in your career, so send an email or, even better, a handwritten note to thank them.
Adding to your reference sheet can be a daunting task but can help you in getting your next job done correctly. For more tips on getting a job, check out our resources page!
